On Friday, 7 November 2025, the European Union-funded InnoThyroGen project presented its story at the EH Community Widening Impact Webinar – Fall Series. The webinar, moderated by João Malva, Coordinator for the Aligned CHAngeing EH Project, featured a keynote presentation by Dr. Nikolina Pleić, InnoThyroGen Coordinator, who shared the project’s journey “From Idea Conception to Post-Project Ambitions and Vision.”
InnoThyroGen – Innovating Thyroid Health with Genomics and Predictive Algorithms through Collaborative Excellence – is part of the EU Horizon WIDERA call, aiming to leverage cutting-edge genomics, AI, and pharmacogenomics to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of thyroid disorders. The project addresses critical challenges in managing thyroid diseases, including hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, autoimmune conditions such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease, and thyroid cancers.
Dr. Pleić began the webinar by detailing the proposal background that inspired the InnoThyroGen concept and consortium formation. She then guided attendees through the project’s development and implementation, highlighting the integration of next-generation sequencing (NGS), polygenic risk scores (PRS), electronic health records (EHRs), and lifestyle data to enhance prediction and prevention of thyroid disorders.
The presentation also explored the role of AI-driven innovations and pharmacogenomics in enabling precision medicine for thyroid patients. These approaches promise to address common challenges such as improper dosing of levothyroxine, severe side effects from antithyroid medications, and misdiagnosis, which affect patient outcomes and healthcare costs.
Concluding the session, Dr. Pleić shared InnoThyroGen’s post-project ambitions, emphasizing the project’s commitment to translating its findings into clinical practice. Key outcomes include developing thyroid disease gene panels, digital tools powered by AI, and personalized therapeutic strategies that could transform thyroid care across Europe.
The webinar highlighted how InnoThyroGen exemplifies collaborative excellence in EU-funded projects, combining genomics, AI, and pharmacogenomics to create personalized, cost-effective, and impactful solutions for thyroid health.
